Exactly what South Etobicoke Needs

A couple of months ago my wife and I were driving near Lakeshore and Brown's Line, and were quite intrigued to see a new Italian Restaurant in the works. It was very evident from the appearance of the restaurant that they were putting quite a lot of work into it. We both thought the same thing - it's exactly the type of restaurant and business that we feel the area needs to raise the standards. But, would it live up to its appearance? We first visited the restaurant opening night, and have since returned. There were the usual delays that one expects in a new restaurant, and mixed results with the different dishes we've tried. But overall, I'm left with one main impression - the Pulcinella has the potential to be the finest Italian restaurant in Etobicoke, and one of the finest in Toronto. The atmosphere of the restaurant is quite unique. It feels both high-end yet very warm at the same time. It's clear that a lot of attention has been given to decor. It's a nice touch that the owner and head chef will both mingle with the guests throughout the evening. We've been able to try the calamari, mussels, Caprese salad, lamb spiedini, gnocchi, butternut squash ravioli, t-bone steak, veal, lamb, and finally the market meat - a nice juicy bison steak. The chef has also allowed me to test a new artichoke salad he's working on, I can only hope it makes the menu! As I said, our experience with the different dishes were mixed. The bison was incredible, one of the most memorable dishes I've ever had. The calamari is mouth-watering, stuffed and grilled to near-perfection. The Caprese salad is second to none. A few of the other dishes need a little work yet (for example, I found the crispness of the beans in the mussels sauce to be an overpowering texture, but maybe that's just me). However, the chef and owner are very open to feedback, so the few issues we had will be easily remedied. The prices may make this restaurant more of a 'special occasion' outing for some, with dishes ranging from $15-50. And like a truly traditional Italian meal experience, you're more likely to leave satisfied if you go for the full three courses. So, if you can't tell yet, I do highly recommend this restaurant. It's what our area needs. And as the kinks get worked out of the serving time and menu, it will truly be a very special place to eat in our neighbourhood! ps - do yourself a huge favour and order the creme brulee for dessert - it's quite unlike any other, I promise you! |
