I first visited Etobicoke when I was living in Kitchener and showing my paintings at the One of a Kind Show at the Exhibition grounds at christmas. I would stay with a cousin in Mimico and make the drive every night from downtown out to the west end to his apartment. Passing by the Christie factory and some of the other light industrial areas, I was intrigued by the ambiance of the neighbourhood and began thinking about using some of places I had seen as the source for my urban landscape paintings. By chance, I ended up moving into South Etobicoke a few years later and finally had an opportunity to spend some more time researching interesting areas to photograph and eventually paint. Many people might not see the beauty in an empty parking lot or an industrial park, but I've always been fascinated by the way light can change an otherwise mundane landscape into something completely different. Purposefully searching out some of the more banal places in the area, and going at at all times of day and nightand in the rain, I began to slowly build a body of new paintings. It'd be easy to make a beautiful painting of one of the many great parks by the lake-but a beautiful painting of an empty parking lot? Now there's a challenge I can sink my artistic teeth in to. Here's a selection of a few of my newest oil on canvas paintings based on the neighbourhood. All of the works shown here and many more are the basis for my upcoming show at the Mira Godard Gallery in the Yorkville area of Toronto, opening May 2nd.
