On Wednesday, April 15, 2009, at 9:58 a.m., a police officer, driving west on the Gardiner Expressway, saw a car allegedly travelling well above the posted 100 km/h speed limit.

It is further alleged that:

  • the officer was driving west near Kipling Avenue when a 2006 Audi A3 was observed driving at a high rate of speed,
  • a speed-measuring device was used by the officer, registering a speed of 186 km/h in a 100 km/h zone,
  • the vehicle made multiple lane changes, continuing west into Mississauga,
  • the vehicle was slowed by heavy traffic, giving the officer the opportunity to stop and identity the driver.

The 34-year-old man was charged with:

  1. Speeding: 186 km/h in a 100 km/h Zone
  2. Racing – Driving at a Rate of Speed - Marked Departure
  3. Racing – Changing Lanes at a Rate of Speed – Marked Departure

His license has been suspended for seven days and the vehicle used in the incident has been impounded for seven days.

According to the Ministry of Transportation, as of Monday, March 23, 2009, 798 drivers have had their licenses suspended for exhibiting extreme driving behavior on the roads of Toronto.

Traffic Services is dedicated to ensuring the safe and orderly movement of traffic within the City of Toronto.

UPDATE:

David Hoang, 20, of Kitchener, has been charged with:
1) Drive Over 80 mgs,
2) Stunt Driving – Drive at rate of speed 50 km/h or more over speed limit,
3) Speeding 145 km/h in a 90 km/h zone,
4) Class G2 licence holder – drive when blood alcohol concentration above zero,
5) Operate motor vehicle without insurance,
6) Produce false evidence,
7) Knowingly have false insurance.
He is scheduled to appear in court at Old City Hall on Tuesday, June 2, 2009, room 111, at 3
p.m.
His driver's licence has been suspended for 90 days. The vehicle used was impounded for
seven days.
