As some of you may or may not know the province of Ontario is introducing a new Environmental Levy Fee starting next week. This means that for the purpose of properly disposing of electronic product you buy in Ontario you will be charged an upfront fee. This fee will be remitted back to the government to fund the program (http://www.ontarioelectronicstewardship.ca/), just think of it as another tax.

So what does that mean for you and me… well although we are not entirely sure how the retail sector is planning on handling this fee as of April 1st, I can say that distributors, have already started making the needed adjustments to charge these fees on invoices. If your not shopping for electronic/computer equipment at the moment then you could stop reading, but if you have planned to buy any of the listed electronic equipment below sometime this year… then I recommend you do it pre-April 1st to save yourself a few bucks.

Type / Fee
---------------
Desktop Computers = $13.44
Portable Computers = $2.14
Computer Peripherals = $0.32
Mice = $0.32
Keyboards = $0.32
Single Hard drives = $0.32
Optical Drives = $0.32
Monitors = $12.03
Televisions = $10.07
18" screen and smaller = $10.07
19" to 29" screen = $10.07 3
0" to 45" screen = $10.07
46" screen and larger = $10.07
Printing Devices = $5.05

Unbe-fing-lievable....the environment is fine...the greedy government and the powerful interests that control it have an agenda in place...including taxing us to death...and this environmental tax...which will be the worlds first GLOBAL tax...funding an emerging WORLD GOVERNMENT which is 110% totalitarian. What a $#$#ing scam! Time to hit the streets...

Don't we pay a fee for disposing of electronic products, if I shop to purchase any of these products, I will make sure the retailer gets the tab for this fee. They can include it in the price, or no sale, period. I'm not paying an environmental fee twice for the same product. Not they're charging it on paint, do these guys ever sleep at night?

Actually for larger tv's around 30" and more, the fee is over $26 not $10. What a total rip off! This should be included in the price of electronics, we should not have to pay it on top of the retail price. Another cash-grab for this corrupt government. Canada is as corrupt as all of them. Sick

Today (October 16/10) I purchased a 26" television set at Wal Mart in Bracebridge, Ont. They charged an "environmental fee" of $12.25. I was almost certain I had heard several weeks ago that the Ont. govt. was no longer going to collect these fees but Walmart says they are still bound to collect them. Am I wrong there?

Future shop tried to add 26.00 to my 295.00 purchase. The government website says 10.07 where's the difference going? Future Shop customer service sucks and you can't call their head office. When I asked for the HEAD OFFICE phone number I was refused reason given People would call there...imagine that people would call there. it's a rip don't pay it I didn't and the tv was returned to the shelf

I just purchased a small set of computer desktop speakers from WalMart for $9.96, and was charged $2.75 for the environmental fee! Something seems terribly wrong here, according to the guidelines shown above. Either things have changed since this fee was introduced, or WalMart is royally ripping people off! (I will contact WalMart today to clarify)

Check out this site for electronics fees.

Looks like Walmart is correct. Desktop speakers fall under audio devices, and I guess desktop means non-portable.

Just buy your stuff from the States, that's what I'm doing. With the Dollar a par, lower taxes and no additional BS why pay a premium to buy in Canada? Support the local economy they say, yeah, I'll start supporting the local economy whenever it stops ripping me off and starts supporting me. We are not getting any "environment" help from our bosses in order to sustain our politicians luxuries.

I was under the distinct impression that this ECO TAX was abolished due to the fact that it legislated by this under false pretenses when these items are recycleable. If you (liberals) are going to keep this up (while I paid more than 10% fee and then taxed on it) when the printer has had its day, I'll make a special trip to Queens Park and throw it on their doorstep. Damn Liberals!!!!

I recently bought a 32" LCD TV from Walmart. It was a floor model and was missing the remote control, plastic stand, owner's manual, and was sold "AS-IS" without a warranty. It didn't even come in a box. As a floor or demo model, it is used and not new, am I correct? I understand that the ENV FEE only applies to new items. I was charged $26.25 as the ENV FEE and then taxed on the item and ENV FEE. As the TV is not new, am I able to insist on a refund of the ENV FEE and related taxes?

I recently bought a 32" LCD TV at Walmart. It was a floor model and sold "as-is" without a box or carton and without a base/stand, remote control, and owner's manual. Is this considered a "new" product and requires that I pay an ENV FEE? I was under the impression that only new TVs were charged this fee. Can I pursue a refund of the fee and the additional taxes paid on the fee?

Next time don't vote for the retarded McGuinty. It was his idea. Send an email to the Premiere suggesting he does something about the fee rather than figure out how to give Go Train guarantees.
