kalamata1Though the Kalamata restaurant has been open for a little over 2 months now, their grand opening took place on Thursday, January 15, 2009. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place at 5pm, and Etobigo was invited to attend!

We spoke with Mario Gonsalvez, the manager of the restaurant, as well as Pat Zisis the owner. On hand were local Etobicoke Councillor Mark Grimes (interview to follow), and MPP Laurel Broten. Below is our interview with Pat Zisis, regarding this great new restaurant (and also the top-reviewed restaurant on Etobigo!).

Justin: What was the impetus around opening your restaurant in this area of the Lake Shore?

Pat: We feel the area really needed a nice restaurant, it was ready for it. There are a lot of people that want a nice family type of restaurant to come to. We also have the banquet hall downstairs that seats 120 people which was also renovated at the same time. We can hold a lot of functions down there - people can book private parties.

Justin: How has the reception been so far?

Pat: Oh, it's been amazing! People are thrilled - there's now a family place to go to, bring the kids. And the food is fantastic; we have some great chefs in the kitchen, and everyone is enjoying the variety of food. Everything is all homemade, so people are enjoying the fact that they can get a nice home-cooked meal.

Justin: Ahh, so you're Greek?

kalamata3Pat: Yes (smiles).

Justin: So, where do you see this area going in the next five years?

Pat: I think it has already improved quite a bit in the last few years, and I think there will be some more nice restaurants opening up. People are used to driving to Port Credit, as there are a lot of nice restaurants. But I'm getting the feedback that people are enjoying just walking here. People were very excited while we were renovating, they kept popping in to see what was coming, now we get a lot of people walking in.

Jason: Have you be booking many events downstairs?

Pat: Yes, it's open for weddings, we have a christening booked, bridal showers, Jack n' Jills, so there will be many parties booked!

Justin: And what would you say is your price range appeals to?

Pat: Middle-of-the-line, average people that live in the area. The prices are very reasonable, so people are ordering appetizers and dessert, and they're leaving very full and very happy. There's a lot of take-out going out as well.

Justin: What's your favourite dish?

Pat: Moussaka - it's really good!

So there you have it - this excellent Greek restaurant looks like it will become a permanent fixture in South Etobicoke. By the way, I recommend the chicken souvlaki, some of the best I've ever had!
